Have you ever found yourself caught in the quiet moments of reflection, wondering what it truly means to be brave? To stand tall when the world seems to crumble around you? I have. And in those moments, I turn to stories - stories that remind me of the strength we all carry within. These stories, these heroic tales, are more than just narratives; they are lifelines, beacons of hope that light the way when darkness threatens to overwhelm.

The Power of Heroic Tales to Connect and Inspire

There is something profoundly human about sharing stories of courage. They reach across time and space, binding us together in a shared experience of resilience and hope. When I listen to or read about heroic acts, I feel a surge of connection - a reminder that I am not alone in my struggles or my dreams.

Heroic tales do more than entertain; they teach us about the human spirit’s capacity to overcome. They invite us to reflect on our own lives and ask, What would I do if faced with such challenges? This question is not just rhetorical - it is a call to action, a nudge toward living with intention and courage.

Imagine a community where these stories are shared openly, where each tale becomes a thread in the fabric of collective strength. This is the vision I hold dear - a village reborn through storytelling and conversation, where inspiration flows freely and support is never far away.

What Makes a Tale Truly Heroic?

When I think about what sets a heroic tale apart, it’s the raw honesty and vulnerability at its core. Heroism is not about perfection or invincibility. It’s about facing fear, uncertainty, and pain with a heart that refuses to give up.

Heroic tales often feature ordinary people doing extraordinary things. They remind me that bravery is accessible to all of us, not just the celebrated few. It’s in the firefighter rushing into a burning building, the neighbor who stands up against injustice, or the single parent juggling countless responsibilities with unwavering love.

These stories resonate because they reflect the complexity of real life - the doubts, the setbacks, the moments of quiet courage that often go unnoticed. They teach us that heroism is not always loud or grandiose; sometimes, it’s the small, steady acts of kindness and resilience that change the world.

What are some real life examples of courage?

Real life is filled with countless examples of courage that inspire me deeply. Take any of the HPR features, for instance. These examples remind me that courage wears many faces. It is not confined to history books or headlines but lives in the everyday choices we make to stand up, reach out, and keep going.

How Can We Cultivate Courage in Our Own Lives?

If these stories move you as they do me, you might wonder - how can I nurture that same courage within myself? The answer, I believe, lies in small, intentional steps.

  • Start with self-compassion: Recognize that fear and doubt are natural. Be gentle with yourself as you face challenges.

  • Seek connection: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. Share your own stories and listen to others.

  • Embrace vulnerability: Allow yourself to be seen, imperfections and all. This openness is a powerful form of bravery.

  • Take action, however small: Courage grows through practice. Whether it’s speaking up, helping a neighbor, or simply showing kindness, each act builds strength.

  • Reflect regularly: Make space for quiet moments to consider your values and the kind of person you want to be.

By weaving these practices into daily life, we create a foundation for courage that can carry us through even the toughest times.

Why Sharing Our Stories Matters More Than Ever

In a world that often feels fragmented and isolating, sharing our stories is a radical act of connection. When I open up about my own struggles and triumphs, I invite others to do the same. This exchange creates a ripple effect, fostering empathy and understanding.

The mission to create spaces for connection, reflection, and inspiration is not just a lofty ideal - it is a necessity. Through storytelling and conversation, we can rebuild the sense of community that so many of us crave. We can bring back the Village - a place where everyone belongs, where every voice matters.

Supporting this vision requires more than good intentions. It calls for active participation, whether through volunteering, sponsoring, or simply showing up with an open heart. Together, we can transform these tales of heroism and bravery into living, breathing sources of hope and strength.

If you’ve ever felt the power of a story to change your perspective or lift your spirits, you know how vital these connections are. Let us continue to share, listen, and inspire - building a world where courage is celebrated, and no one faces their battles alone.

MY FIRST HPR FEATURE - FROM 2014

In Collaboration with HT Correspondent Debjeet Kundu

HPR FEATURE : CHHANDA GAYEN

HPR FEATURE : CHHANDA GAYEN

A Dream Her Family Carried With Her…

Born in Kolkata, Chhanda Gayen was not meant—by circumstance—to become a mountaineer. There were no mountains in her backyard. No roadmap. No financial cushion waiting to support a dream that, for most, would already feel out of reach.

But what she did have was belief. And a family that chose to believe with her.

When Chhanda first began her journey into mountaineering, the costs were staggering—nearly $60,000 USD just to attempt her early climbs. For many, that number alone would have ended the dream before it even began. But her parents refused to let it end there.

Her mother sold her jewellery—piece by piece, letting go of what little she had—so her daughter could climb higher than she ever could. That kind of love doesn’t just support a dream; it becomes the foundation of it.

The Girl Who Carried More Than Her Own Weight…

When I spoke to Chhanda, what stood out wasn’t just her achievements—it was her humility. She didn’t speak like someone chasing records. Instead, she spoke like someone carrying responsibility. For her family. For every young girl told, “this isn’t for you.” For every dream that needed proof it could exist.

She trained relentlessly, often relying on sponsorships and navigating uncertainty—but never losing sight of why she started. And step by step, climb by climb—she rose.

When One Summit Isn’t Enough…

In 2013, Chhanda stood at the top of the world—summiting Mount Everest. For many, that would have been the destination. For her, it was just the beginning. Within 22 hours, she went on to summit Lhotse—pushing her body and spirit beyond what most could comprehend.

It wasn’t about proving something to the world. It was about answering something within herself.

A Spirit That Chose to Go Further…

In 2014, Chhanda returned to the Himalayas—this time to summit Kangchenjunga, one of the most dangerous peaks on Earth. She made it. She stood there—at yet another summit most will never see. And still… she chose to go further. Toward Yalung Kang. Because that was who she was. Not someone who stopped at success—but someone who kept climbing toward possibility.

An Ending… That Became an Echo

It was during that final ascent that an avalanche struck. And Chhanda Gayen never came back. But some lives do not end where we lose them. They continue—in the places they loved the most.

In the mountains she climbed, there is now something more than silence. There is memory. There is courage. There is her.

You Made a Nation Dream…

Chhanda, you made India proud. But more than that—you made young girls believe. You showed them that where you come from does not define how far you can go. That even the highest peaks are not out of reach when your spirit refuses to stay grounded. Your journey did not end on that mountain. It lives on—in every dream that dares to rise higher because of you. And somewhere, in the stillness of those Himalayan peaks—we hear your echoes.

The Power of a Dream That Refuses to Stop…

What does it take to keep going when everything says you shouldn’t? What does it mean to carry not just your own dream—but the sacrifices of those who believed in you?

Chhanda’s story reminds us: Greatness is never achieved alone. It is built on love, on sacrifice, on quiet acts of belief that the world may never see.

And sometimes… the most powerful lives are not the longest—but the ones that move us to live more boldly because they existed.

Thank You…

Thank you, Chhanda Gayen. For your courage. For your humility. For carrying your family’s sacrifice to the highest places on Earth—and turning it into something the world will never forget.

You have helped us believe a little more deeply, dream a little more fearlessly, and look at our own mountains a little differently. You are a real hero, in every way.

The Legacy of Connection and Inspiration

Chhanda’s journey is a testament to the power of community and support. It reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles. We all have mountains to climb, both literal and metaphorical.

In our lives, we need spaces where we can connect, reflect, and inspire one another. It’s about creating a village—a place where stories like Chhanda’s can flourish and encourage others to pursue their dreams.

Creating Spaces for Connection

At Vision One World, we believe in the importance of storytelling and conversations. They are the threads that weave our lives together. By sharing our experiences, we can uplift one another and create a network of support.

Imagine a world where everyone feels seen and heard. Where dreams are nurtured, and aspirations are celebrated. This is the vision we strive for. We invite you to join us in this mission. Let’s create spaces where everyone can feel connected and inspired.

Let’s bring back the Village!

“We were told the baby wasn’t going to make it. It was just a matter of time.”

HPR NEWS by Vision One World

These haunting words forever changed Lorna Levac’s life. What began as the joy of her first pregnancy quickly turned into heartbreak. But what followed was a powerful journey of resilience, love—and purpose.

A Shattered Dream

In 2010, Lorna and her husband John were thrilled to be expecting their first child. However, during her first trimester, complications arose. A benign but large fibroid on Lorna’s uterus caused kidney stones, hospitalisations, and unimaginable discomfort. They held onto hope—until it slipped away. A routine follow-up revealed devastating news: their baby’s heart had stopped.

A Life Nearly Lost

The complications took a toll on Lorna’s body. During the delivery of her stillborn child, she went into shock. Emergency care saved her life, but emotionally, she felt hollow. “There, on the birthing floor where mothers held their newborns, I held the child I lost,” she said. The hospital staff gently moved her to a private room, showing compassion she would never forget.

A Second Chance, A New Beginning

In 2012, after undergoing surgery to remove the fibroid, Lorna became pregnant again. Under the care of the same team at Mount Sinai Hospital, she delivered Benjamin—her miracle baby—on John’s birthday. He spent time in the NICU but soon joined his parents, bringing light back into their lives.

Turning Pain Into Purpose

That second chance ignited a deep desire in Lorna and John to give back. Together, they created an annual charity run to support Mount Sinai’s high-risk pregnancy program.

What began with a few dozen runners grew to over 100 participants and raised over $115,000 for life-saving neonatal equipment.

Their efforts helped purchase:

  • 4 Joey Beds for NICU infants

  • 3 Cribettes for transitioning babies

  • 1 Wireless fetal monitor system

  • Plus new mattresses for mothers' beds

A Legacy of Gratitude

“We can never forget what we went through, but we’ve found peace,” says Lorna. Her voice, full of conviction, has inspired many to join her cause. The marathon is more than a fundraiser—it’s a tribute to her first child and to the healthcare heroes who helped them heal. As Lorna puts it: “If it had all gone smoothly, we might never have realized how much that care truly meant.”

The Power of Community

In times of hardship, the strength of community shines brightest. Lorna's story is a testament to the bonds we forge with others. It reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles. When we share our stories, we create connections that can uplift and inspire.

Imagine a world where we all come together, sharing our experiences and supporting one another. Wouldn’t that be a beautiful place?

Finding Strength in Vulnerability

Lorna’s journey teaches us about the power of vulnerability. It’s okay to feel lost, to grieve, and to seek help. In sharing our pain, we often find healing. Lorna’s willingness to open up about her loss has not only helped her but has also touched the hearts of many.

Have you ever felt the weight of loss? It can be overwhelming. But through sharing our stories, we can lighten that burden. We can find solace in knowing that others have walked similar paths.

A Call to Action

Let Lorna’s story inspire you to take action. Whether it’s participating in a charity run, volunteering your time, or simply reaching out to someone in need, every effort counts. Together, we can make a difference.

Thank you, Lorna Levac, for running not just for yourself—but for all of us.

Let this story remind us: from the depths of loss can rise the most powerful acts of love. And in this journey of life, we are all heroes in our own right, rising from the ashes of our struggles.
